M. David Detweiler, 1947–2014

MDavid Detweiler

M. David Detweiler IV, president and chairman of the Board of Stackpole, Inc., died on September 27 in Harrisburg, PA. He was 67. Detweiler joined the parent company of Stackpole Books, the firm founded by his grandfather in the 1930s, in 1981 and became president in 1989. He was named chairman of the Board in 1998.

Stackpole Books, a family-owned and operated business for three generations, is a trade book publisher of outdoor, military history and craft titles. Under Detweiler's leadership the company reestablished its tradition of publishing fly-fishing, Civil War, and World War II history titles and grew to be a mid-sized publisher, internationally recognized. In addition to publishing books, Detweiler created and developed two magazines, Wildfowl Carving and Rug Hooking. Recently the company broadened its book list to include craft titles.

Judith M. Schnell, the Publisher of Stackpole Books, said, "David loved the company he and his family created and built and he worked tirelessly–even through illness–for the firm. Stackpole was his life's work. We shall miss his distinctive leadership and his exemplary style."

Detweiler is the author of two nonfiction books and several novels. Most recently he wrote Gettysburg: The Story of the Battle with Maps, with co-editor David Reisch. This month, a successor volume by Detweiler, The Civil War: The Story of the War with Maps, will be published by Stackpole.

Stackpole will continue to be family operated with John Granatino, acting chairman of the Board. Schnell will continue her role as Publisher while serving as acting President/CEO of Stackpole, Inc.

In 2010, Detweiler was interviewed for Highmark Blue Shield's Living Legacy Series, an oral history project created to record the memories of 150 Harrisburg-area residents, celebrating the City of Harrisburg's 150th year of incorporation.

The Cleve J. Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill, PA, is pleased to honor M. David Detweiler IV and his ongoing contribution to the world of letters by dedicating the 2014–2015 Great Books Program to his memory.
